Obtaining items this library does not own

    Purpose of Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

To obtain loans of circulating books, videos, etc., that are not available at UW-La Crosse or from another UW Library and to obtain articles from journals not included in our collections.

    Availability and Cost

Interlibrary Loan services are available to all UW-La Crosse students, staff, and faculty (including emeriti) at no cost to the user.  If an item costs over $50, the user will be contacted to verify that the item is worth the expense. If the user deems the item is worth the cost, the library will procure the item at no cost to the user.

    How to Request an Item

Please use the Library Catalog to check all UW System libraries for books. If you find the item at one of our sister (UW) institutions, please use Universal Borrowing.

For articles, use the Murphy Library Journal Search to ensure that Murphy Library does not own the item. Periodicals may be in Current, Bound, Microfilm, Microfiche or electronic format.

After this step, please access the ILLiad system from one of the following addresses:

Log in to your ILL account with your NetID

Log in to your ILL account with your ID number

When the material requested is received, users will be notified by UW-L e-mail. The email will indicate how to access your materials. All books, videos and some articles will be held for pick-up at the Circulation Desk at Murphy Library.  Articles are delivered electronically, either as a PDF file on a web site, or delivered as a PDF file attached to an e-mail.  You have 30 days to download the PDF file before it is deleted.

    How long until it arrives?

How long can I keep it?

Typically 2 business days.  Obscure and complex requests require more time. Yours to keep.  PDF files stay on the server for 30 days.   Download the article if you need to keep it longer.

Typically one week. Typically 30 days, availability of renewals varies by the lending library.  Renewal requests can be made from within your ILLiad account so long as the item has not gone into overdue status.  One can also contact the ILL unit for assistance

     Lost Items

If you lose an item which needs to be returned, you will be charged the cost set by the lending library.

    Restrictions on Loans

All requests must be in compliance with the National Interlibrary Loan Code, other regional, state, and local resource sharing agreements and copyright law.

Lending libraries may place restrictions on the use of any loaned item and may request that the item be returned prior to its due date.

  • Library Construction

During the next few weeks, several library restrooms will be remodeled.

We expect minimal disruption to library services, but there might be occasional construction-related noise as well as the occasional presence of construction materials.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Construction should be complete by July, 2014.
