    Gaming consoles in residence halls

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse does not encourage students to use the campus network connection in order to play video games or take advantage of other network functions currently available through gaming consoles, but we do understand that many students now own and use their gaming consoles in their daily lives.  We do not support any issues you may encounter while playing video games or using gaming consoles for any reason in the residence halls.  Also, we do not guarantee the network connection speed or quality gaming consoles receive in the residence halls , especially during academic hours.  The campus network and internet connection received in the residence halls to be used first and foremost for the completion of academic related work and research.  That being said, below you will find information regarding connecting some of the most popular gaming consoles to the campus network.

    Currently Supported Devices

    • Microsoft Xbox
    • Microsoft Xbox 360
    • Nintendo Gamecube
    • Nintendo Wii
    • Sony Playstation 2 (PS2)
    • Sony Playstation 3 (PS3)

Although all recent gaming consoles come with the capability of being connected to a wireless network, no current gaming consoles support the authentication procedure used on our campus network. Keep in mind, you are forbidden to use a router or access point in the residence halls (wired or wireless).  Violation of this rule will result in the device being confiscated by Information Technology Services or Residence Life Information Services

Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus for Students

In late 2013, Microsoft announced that universities with existing Microsoft Office licenses for faculty and staff would also be allowed to provide students use of Microsoft Office products. The new service is called Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus for Students and allows students to download, install, and use Microsoft Office at no cost. To take advantage of this new service follow these steps:

    1. Visit portal.microsoftonline.com and enter your UW-L email address where prompted (ex: doe.john@uwlax.edu). Please note you will then be redirected to UW-L's login screen.
    2. When prompted enter your UW-L NetID password. Your email address will already be in the username box and should be left there. If you have forgotten or need to reset your NetID password visit www.uwlax.edu/password.
    3. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the software for your device.
    4. When launching the software for the first time you will be asked to log in to activate Microsoft Office. Use your full UW-L email address and NetID password to activate Office.

Some information to be aware of when using Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus for Students.

    • Students will be able to download and install Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus for Students on up to five personal devices.
    • The software is available for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and other mobile operating systems.
    • The features of Office 365 ProPlus for Students mirror the same Microsoft Office currently available on campus.
    • Devices must check-in with Microsoft at least once every 30 days to retain their activation for Office.
    • Students will lose access to the free software once they discontinue enrollment at UW-L. They may purchase a subscription to Microsoft Office if they would like to continue to have access to the software after leaving UW-L.
